Installation of low vibration piles within listed six storey stone warehouses dating from 1830.

Low vibration piling was critical on this project due to the buildings listed status. We were awarded the piling package after provision of Eurocode compliant pile calculations and extensive trial piling and pile testing.

Restricted access to the piling areas was overcome using our small D500 piling rigs and drill rigs with DTH (down the hole) rotary percussive hammer attachments.

Hard stone layers beneath the floors and boulder obstructions were pre-drilled prior to installation of the mini piles. The pre-drilling was essential as the contractor could not access the piling areas with excavators and us drilling small diameter holes through the stone floors and obstructions was better for the structure than a large internal reduced level excavation and the likely excessive vibration caused by breaking up and removing boulder obstructions.

PROJECT SPECIFICATION

180No 219mm dia mini piles pre-drilled to 4.0m and cased to depths in excess of 7.0m.

Low vibration drilling and piling all below a vibration level of 5mm/sec.
